There is a place on the far Eastern Coast that is a jewel among the sea. Off the coast of North Carolina and nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound, lies Hatteras Island. It is an extension of part of the greater known and beloved Outer Banks. It is isolated, picturesque and romantic.
There are many Nicholas Sparks books with settings in the Outer Banks, maybe none more popular than Message in a Bottle. As a romantic myself, there's a quote that always stood out to me and that I always think of upon driving onto Hatteras Island. For me, it conjures feelings of calmness, solidarity, tranquility and love. "I already had what everyone is searching for but few ever find, the one person in the world who I was born to love forever. A person like me, of the Outer Banks and the blue Atlantic mystery. A person rich in simple treasures, self made, self taught. A harbor where I am forever home. And no wind, or trouble, or even a little death can knock down this house. The prayer is that everyone in the world can know this kind of love and be healed by it." My interpretation of that is that you can be healed by love and you can certainly be healed by Hatteras Island.
One of the greatest treats of Hatteras is being able to drive on the beach. There's nothing like it! Every evening, we'd drive out just before sunset with a bottle of wine and appreciate the splendor.
*hazy, sandy, grainy pic
Driving on the beach gives you the pleasure of coming and going as you please, not worrying about schlepping everything through the sand. Pack it in the truck, drive on the beach and enjoy! Seclusion and privacy are a real luxury here. Everyone respects others space.
During our trip, in addition to sunrise and sunset watching, there was kite flying and seashell hunting.
But, we also immensely enjoyed the house on the sound. Great location and awesome accommodations through Outer Beaches Realty.
On our last night in Hatteras, we were blessed with one of the most spectacular sunsets. Amazing vacation, ultimate relaxation, and we can't wait to go back next year!
